Your roof, the thing that keeps you warm at night and in the winter, provides you coverage from the extreme weather, isn’t going to last forever. This is a sad fact that needs to be addressed to ensure you are safe and well protected in your home. There are ways to tell when your roof needs to be replaced.
In your attic, there are four things to look for: places that are sagging, water damage or leaking, dark spots, and outside light showing through the roof. These seem like obvious reasons to get your roof replaced, and putting it off is only going to cause more issues and cost more money in the long run. It is recommended that you check your roof at least two times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, to ensure that no harsh weather has caused any damage to the roof.
You should also check the exterior of your roof. Missing shingles, blistering or curling, rotting and algae growth are some reasons to replace your roof. Visually inspecting your roof for any missing shingles or odd parts to the shingles, and scanning the roof for loose material or wear and tear. Moisture, rot and mold should always be noted as they can cause water to seep into your home.
You can also check the inside of your home. The interior ceilings can show any leaking that is caused by the roof structure. If you have any leaking inside the home, this requires immediate attention to the roof because not only is it damaging the roof but the walls are also being damaged. Mold can also grow very quickly as it grows in damp areas.
Shingles are a number one thing to keep a close eye on. Once shingles become warped, curled or cupped, they are no longer able to keep water from seeping through the roof, causing serious structural damage. You cannot reverse this problem and it is best to replace all of the shingles at this point. Inspect the shingles at least once a year for signs of damage, wear and tear, replacing them as you see fit.
Consider your roof to be one of the most essential parts to your home. Without it, you wouldn’t have much of a home to live in. Therefore it is important that you make sure your roof is in good condition and if it isn’t it needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Repair your roof when you see any of the above issues arise.
